The World Health Organization maintains a state of maximum emergency regarding Covid-19, and the wave of infections in China will soon end

Date:

Officials in China said in a report released last week that the number of severe COVID-19 cases and deaths from COVID-19 is on the decline.

The World Health Organization decided on Monday to maintain the maximum state of emergency regarding the Covid-19 epidemic, three years after declaring the disease a health emergency of global proportions.

The Director-General of the Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, followed the recommendations of the Emergency Committee on Covid-19, which is a committee of experts that met Friday for the fourteenth time, according to what was stated in a statement, after he was informed that he considered it premature to reduce the level of emergency.

In China, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said in its weekly epidemiological update that the current wave of coronavirus infections in the country is coming to an end, and that cases will not witness a significant increase during the Lunar New Year holiday.

Officials said in a report released last week that the number of severe COVID-19 cases and deaths from COVID-19 is trending downward.

Japan will continue to watch

Not far from China, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said on Monday that Japan will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation in China and handle “flexibly” border control measures.

The suspension came a day after the Chinese Embassy in Japan announced that it had resumed issuing regular visas to Japanese citizens traveling to the country.

Earlier this month, China stopped issuing visas to Japanese, after Japan tightened COVID-19-related restrictions at borders for travelers coming directly from China.
