- The White House has officially notified Congress
- Trump announced the move during the pandemic
- He accused WHO of not containing the virus and accused it of targeting China and hiding information
- The nation is on the cusp of 3 million infections and is a leading global hot spot
- Senator Robert Menendez destroyed the move as part of a “chaotic and disjointed” response
- The US is the largest voluntary contributor to the group
The Trump administration has told Congress that the nation has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization, which is seeking to organize an international response to the coronavirus pandemic.
News of the move broke one day when US deaths from the virus exceeded 130,000, and the country was on the eve of 3 million infections.
President Trump announced the move in May after repeatedly accusing the international catering group to China and failing to protect other countries from the outbreak.
The Trump administration has formally told Congress that the US is withdrawing from the World Health Organization
Senator Robert Mendendez (DN.J.), chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, announced the notification on Twitter, considering the decision as short-sighted and risky.
Congress was notified that POTUS officially withdrew the US from @WHO during a pandemic. Trump’s response to COVID calling it chaotic and incoherent does no justice. This will not protect American lives or interests – it leaves Americans sick and America alone, “he wrote.
The government also told the UN Secretary General, a government official told Fox News. The move would take effect in July 2021 – which would theoretically give Trump or Democrat Joe Biden, who is leading the polls, a chance to reverse it.
Trump accused the WHO this spring when he shocked US and world officials when he announced the move. He said the WHO has failed to “implement much-needed reforms” and said the US would divert money to other global health organizations.
The action even withdrew the prominent republicans, who have raised some of the WHO’s mistakes, but nevertheless saw the advantage of a global health group addressing issues such as COVID-19, malaria and ebola.
US officials have hammered WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus into praising China for its ‘transparency’ early in the outbreak.
Trump referred to the corona virus again on Tuesday as the “ horrifying China virus. ”
