Emmanuel Macron and Boris Johnson spent a weekend exchanging private WhatsApp messages about allowing quarantine-free travel between Britain and France – blind officials on both sides of the channel who had been kept out of the circle.

The Mail on Sunday has learned that the Prime Minister and the French President regularly talk about the messaging service away from the prying eyes of assistants.

They had contact last weekend, which led to an unexpected announcement on Sunday evening that travelers from France would not be subject to the same 14-day quarantine as everyone arriving in the UK.

Just 20 minutes after Mr. Johnson announced the draconian measure to all visitors on his televised address to the country on Sunday, Downing Street said, “There would be no quarantine measures at this stage for travelers coming from France; all measures on both sides would be taken jointly and reciprocally. ”

However, by the end of the week, the government had made a clear turnaround in the exemption.

After the EU warned against selecting one member of the block, No. 10 officials claimed the statement had been misinterpreted.

They pointed out that it was only said that there was “no quarantine at this stage” – which applies to travelers from all countries, as measures are not expected until the end of this month – and emphasized “no exemption has been agreed with France.”

However, ministers struggle to keep the crucial trade route flowing across the Channel.

A government source admitted, “Boris and Macron have overcooked it a bit with WhatsApp diplomacy.”
