The Walking Dead: Carol Peletier kills Lance Hornsby with arrow while looking for missing friends

Carol Peletier shot and killed Lance Hornsby with an arrow to the neck while she and Daryl Dixon looked for their friends on Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead.

The season 11 episode titled What’s Been Lost opened with Carol [Melissa McBride] gathering baked bread before leaving as Ezekiel [Khary Payton] offered her some medical supplies before he suddenly disappeared.

Carol was then attacked and escaped with her bow and arrows only to find Daryl [Norman Reedus] fighting with a Commonwealth soldier after killing one of them.

She rescued Daryl from his attacker who then was promptly chomped on by his comrade who became a zombie.

‘They took the kids,’ Daryl told Carol.

‘They took everyone,’ Carol said.

Commonwealth Governor Pamela Milton [Laila Robins] met with donors and assured them the situation was well in hand.

‘I’ve already suspended all migrant entry into the city until further notice,’ Pamela said in response to an insurgency pinned on newcomers.

A donor told Pamela that she was sorry about the death of her son Sebastian who was killed by a zombie unleashed by Lance’s goons during a community gathering.

‘Worse than death, yes,’ Pamela said of her loss. ‘But, Sebastian will always be with me.’

Yumiko [Eleanor Matsuura] stormed into the meeting and confronted Pamela for removing her friends from the Commonwealth.

Pamela then revealed that she was assigning Yumiko to prosecute her friend Eugene Porter [Josh McDermitt] on behalf of the Commonwealth for killing Sebastian.

‘Sign my friend’s death warrant in some kangaroo court publicity stunt? Yeah, that’s never gonna happen,’ Yumiko said.

‘Well, then neither will a reunion with your friends. Is that what you want? And let’s not forget your brother. You should consider how your actions might affect him as well,’ Pamela said referencing Yumiko’s doctor brother Tomichi.

Pamela then said that she was getting ready for a press conference announcing that Yumiko was going to prosecute Eugene.

Daryl told Carol that their friends were taken along with his beloved canine companion Dog and they considered turning to Commonwealth military general Michael Mercer [Michael James Shaw] for help, but weren’t sure if he’d turn them in.

‘S***. There is one other person,’ Carol said.

‘Hornsby?,’ Daryl asked.

‘He knows all the dark s*** that goes on around here,’ Carol said.

Yumiko visited her brother Tomi at the hospital and told him how her friends had been removed from the Commonwealth and how Pamela was demanding that she prosecute Eugene.

Tomi told her the best way to protect her friends was to go along with Pamela and sacrifice Eugene.

Connie [Lauren Ridloff] surprised Yumiko at the hospital and revealed that she ran away after being attacked, but her sister Kelly [Angel Theory] had been abducted.

They spoke in sign language and Connie said she knew the man who she stabbed to get away would need medical attention, so she came to the hospital.

Connie said she planned on following the man once he was released to find her sister, but Yumiko said it was too dangerous and volunteered to do it.

They agreed that they couldn’t risk seeing each other again and hugged.

Daryl and Carol meanwhile broke into the jail where Lance [Josh Hamilton] was being held in the same room with zombie Sebastian who was eating on the remains of Commonwealth spy Roman Calhoun.

Daryl roughed up Lance to find out where their friends had been taken until Carol took over the interrogation.

‘Lance, look at me. Look at me. We can’t leave you here alive. Either you tell us where our friends are, or you’re dead,’ Carol said with a blade pressed against his face.

She walked into Lance’s cell and was overcome with grief while looking at Sebastian’s dead, mutilated corpse.

Pamela came across Lance’s coin that he left behind and an an angry look grew on her face.

Eugene told Yumiko that he already had freely accepted his fate as she broke the news that Pamela was forcing her to prosecute him.

‘One thing we can do is return the unwavering faith our absconded friends have always shown for us and trust that, no matter how bleak things look in this moment, that this is not the end,’ Eugene said.

Lance while showing Carol an exit through shaky tunnels asked her about the future of the Commonwealth.

‘Let’s say Pamela doesn’t survive it. That’s going to open up a power vacuum. And when that happens, well, just look at history. The people who suffer the most in revolutions are the civilians,’ Lance said.

‘You and your people will hold 50,000 lives in your hands. …Will you let the Commonwealth burn?,’ Lance said.

They were attacked by wet, loose-skinned zombies, but Carol mowed most of them down with a rifle.

They escaped, but only to be surrounded by a squad of Commonwealth troopers.

Daryl, however, arrived at the right right time and shot all of the soldiers to death.

Yumiko showed up at the press conference where Pamela revealed to her that Connie had been picked up and placed with the others.

She then announced her intent to defend Eugene ‘who has been wrongly and unjustly accused by Pamela Milton and the Commonwealth’ as Pamela looked on shocked and angry.

Lance meanwhile spilled that he knew the outside routes from the Commonwealth supply train that was part of their plan to expand Commonwealth’s reach.

Daryl said they’d leave before dawn without Lance, who protested they couldn’t get there without him.

‘We wait for it to come, and then we see where it goes,’ Carol said.

‘You’re a smart guy, Lance. You might survive,’ Carol said.

Lance walked away, but suddenly grabbed a rifle and turned to fire at them.

Carol, however, quickly shot an arrow that struck Lance in the neck.

Blood gurgled from his mouth as Lance died out in the woods while Carol and Daryl drove off.

Ezekiel was one of the passengers and the bag over his head was lifted as a soldier injected a needle into his neck as the episode came to a close.

What’s Been Lost was directed by Aisha Tyler, 52, who also has directed episodes of Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

The Walking Dead will return next week on AMC.
