The WA families bypassing sperm donor clinics

Hooper himself fathered more than 15.

“I’ve made a lot of friendships with this now. We have donor and sibling meetings with the parents. The kids all go down and play with each other,” he said.

Hooper said demand for sperm donors was increasing and many women are unable or unwilling to find a partner until later in life.

In WA, sperm donation laws only apply to donations through fertility clinics, and stipulate that a donor can only donate to five families worldwide.

This measure is to exclude the prospect of accidental consanguinity.

“Every time there’s a new birth, I put a new update in the registry so everyone knows who’s who so there’s no accidental incest,” Maynard said.

According to IVF Australia, one IVF cycle can cost more than $10,000.

About half can be claimed back through health discounts, but it’s still considered an expensive option for many.

Doctors say the safest option is to go through a professional.

Michael Gannon, Dr Michael Gannon of the Australian Medical Association, said there would be basic testing for infectious diseases and possibly some degree of screening for genetic abnormalities.

Professor Roger Hart, National Medical Director of City Fertility, said rigorous counseling processes should also be undertaken.

“However, I don’t think this is the perfect way to get conceived, but the risks are similar to a one-night stand,” Gannon said.
