‘That attitude’ [about Australia lacking talent] always amazes me, because there are huge amounts of untapped talent in the country,” Sonia said.

She said the show was determined to find “diamonds in the rough” in the community.

Sonia turned her attention to the coaches, saying that she found Rita, 30, to be both beautiful and incredibly intelligent.

Rita, known for hits Hot Right Now and Your Song, flew to Sydney in February to film The Voice before heading to Los Angeles in early June.

She said The Daily Telegraph last month she “didn’t want to leave” after extending her stay in Australia.

‘I had the best time, enjoying the weather, the beautiful beaches. The food is incredible,” she said.

‘Australia is the most wonderful place, the most loving, welcoming place. I enjoyed everything, getting in the water, sitting in the sun… I really felt like a real Aussie.’

‘I set up a studio in the hotel room, I read a lot, I recorded a lot of music. Zoom was my best friend,” she added.

Rita said the performance at the Sydney Mardi Gras in March “changed my life”, revealing that it was her first time on stage since the start of the pandemic.
