The Voice Australia’s Matthew Garwood is elected mayor of Launceston

A former The Voice Australia finalist has had a drastic change in her career.

Matthew Garwood, who reached the show’s final in 2014 and returned for the all-star series four years ago, has been elected mayor of Tasmania’s second-largest city.

On Wednesday, the musical theater singer assumed the title of mayor of Launceston after receiving 57.71 percent of the vote.

Matthew has been the city’s acting mayor since May, after previous mayor Danny Gibson resigned amid controversy.

speaking to the Mercury after the results, Matthew said he was “really satisfied”.

“It’s going to take a little while to sink in, I’ve literally been hitting the update button from my office all day,” Garwood said.

He added: ‘I think the Launceston community is ready for its next best version and the momentum that even Mayor Gibson had begun to instill, I think Launceston is ready for that.

“I’m ready to move on and put the focus back on the community, take the spotlight off of us.”

While Matthew has had a major change in his career, last month he also welcomed his first child, a girl named Billy.

She shared an adorable snap on Instagram of him taking her to her first basketball game.

Alongside the cute photo, the mayor wrote, “It’s amazing that as the current mayor of the city and a new father, I can continue to do what I love and continue to contribute to amazing parts of our community like tonight.”

“I’m not sure what other mayors might be doing on a Saturday night, but I love DJing and supporting the Launceston Tornadoes.”

The singer welcomed his first child with his partner last month, just after he became acting mayor.
