For nine years and eight seasons The diary of vampires brought the romance, suspense and mystery of Mystic Falls, Virginia, to the small screen.
The show, which debuted on September 10, 2009, is based on LJ Smith’s book series of the same name. It follows the love triangle between teenage Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and two vampire brothers, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). But danger and disaster followed, dragging Elena and her friends into the supernatural world of Mystic Falls, filled with vampires, witches, werewolves and more. The series also starred Kat Graham, Candice King, Zach Roerig, Michael Trevino, Steven R. McQueen, Matthew Davis, Michael Malarkey and Joseph Morgan.
Created by Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, the show still has a strong fan base, with viewers still sharing clips and video compilations on social media years after the supernatural teen drama came to an end.
Prior to the final episode on March 10, 2017, Plec spoke to The Hollywood reporter about what it was like to say goodbye to the beloved CW show and about the emotional final days of filming on set in Atlanta.
“It was about as powerful as you might imagine,” she said at the time. “There were many speeches, many hugs, many tears, many ugly cries. It was very emotional and almost debilitating at times, but it was really beautiful.”

Nina Dobrev played Elena Gilbert, a torn teenage girl who falls into a chaotic love triangle with vampire brothers Stefan and Damon and ends up becoming a vampire too. She also took on two other characters throughout the show, Katherine Pierce and Amara. The actress left Vampire diaries at the end of season six, but did return for an appearance in the final episode.
Since her appearance on The CW show, she has starred in several movies, including Flatliners, Then you came, Love difficult And The outer laws. She also played Clem in the 2019 series Family.

Paul Wesley played the role of Stefan Salvatore, the younger gloomy vampire brother who yearns for Elena’s heart. He also played the characters Silas and Tom Avery at times during the series.
After The diary of vampires ended in 2017, the actor went on to star in several other TV shows including Tell me a story And Star Trek: strange new worlds.
While Wesley played Ian Somerhalder’s brother on The CW show, the duo remained good friends after it ended. They also launched their own bourbon brand, Brother’s Bond, in May 2021.
Ian Somerhalder played Damon Salvatore, the charismatic older vampire brother who also has a crush on Elena Gilbert. He starred in the series for all eight seasons.
As a sequel to The diary of vampiresthe actor stepped away from the screen for a few years but returned for another vampire show, V Wars, which he starred in and executive produced. In addition to acting, Somerhalder launched a bourbon brand, Brother’s Bond, in May 2021 with his former co-star and close friend Paul Wesley.
Somerhalder was also romantically linked to his co-star Nina Dobrev for three years before they broke up in 2013. He then married in April 2015 Dusk star Nikki Reed, and they share two children together.
