The US Secretary of State will visit China on June 18

Date:

For the first time since Joe Biden took office in the United States, US and Chinese President Xi Jinping met last November at the G20 summit in Indonesia. During the meeting, they agreed to cooperate on a number of issues.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will travel to China at the end of next week, on a visit that was postponed last February following the incursion of a Chinese balloon into US airspace, as US officials announced Friday.

Blinken will arrive in Beijing on June 18, according to the officials, who asked not to be identified and indicated that it will be the first visit by a senior US diplomat to China since the visit of his predecessor, Mike Pompeo, in October 2018.

The US State Department did not officially announce the visit.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby recently said that Washington will announce “in the near future” the travel of US officials, without adding any details.

For the first time since Joe Biden took office in the United States, US and Chinese President Xi Jinping met last November at the G20 summit in Indonesia. During the meeting, they agreed to cooperate on a number of issues.

But relations between the two countries soured again in February after a Chinese surveillance drone flew over US territory in what Washington considered an act of espionage. Blinken canceled a trip to China at the last minute.

Recently, however, both sides have sought de-escalation, notably during a closed-door meeting in May in Vienna between White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and CPC Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Wang Yi.

But tension is still going on between the two countries over Taiwan issues, China’s claims to sovereignty over large parts of the China Sea, or even the issue of strategic electronic chips.
