The United States women’s national team survived a pair of questionable goals from the Canadians to win the SheBelieves Cup in a penalty shootout Tuesday night.
The game was tied at 2 at the end of regulation after a double each by American forward Sophia Smith and Canadian Adriana León.
Both Canadian goals would have been checked by VAR in a larger tournament, as the SheBelieves Cup depended solely on the referee’s decisions.
Controversial American star Korbin Albert was substituted in the 75th minute and received a mixed reaction from the Columbus crowd.
The United States trailed 1-0 at halftime after León scored into an empty net in the 40th minute.
Sophia Smith scored two goals for the United States and helped the team defeat Canada on PK.
Crystal Dunn was in disbelief that she was called for a foul, giving Canada a late penalty kick.
Sophia Smith tied the match in the 50th minute and gave the Americans the momentary lead in the 68th minute.
León’s first goal could have been called for a Canadian foul, as one of her teammates collided with American goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, but no violation was called.
Leon’s game-tying goal in the 86th minute occurred after she was pushed into the penalty area by Crystal Dunn, with several USWNT in disbelief that the push was enough to award Canada a penalty.
In real time, committing a foul seemed tough, especially with no one to control the referee’s decision.
The match almost did not go to penalties, as Canadian Kadeisha Buchanan hit the crossbar with a header from a corner kick in the 90th minute.
Albert appeared as a second-half substitute in the United States against Canada on Tuesday.
Naeher saved three shootout penalties in seven rounds, and Emily Fox scored the trophy-winning shot.
Several days ago, Albert shared a new post on TikTok from a Christian worship space discussing how being gay and “feeling transgender” is wrong.
Albert later apologized for the post.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions on social media,” Albert said. “Liking and sharing posts that are offensive, insensitive and hurtful was immature and disrespectful, which was never my intention.”
“I am truly disappointed in myself and I am deeply sorry for the harm I have caused to my teammates, other players, fans, friends and anyone who was offended,” Albert continued.
