Viewers were so shocked by the new relationship that they even demanded an apology from the show’s creator.
The sci-fi drama series, starring Elliot Page, follows a disbanded group of superheroes reunited after the death of their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreaves.

However, fans were left confused by the director’s decision to present the couple in a romantic light considering the confusing age dynamics.
Viewers were quick to point out that Lila engages in a sexual relationship with Five despite knowing him as a child, not to mention the fact that she already has a family with her brother.
While fans might have been able to stand the idea of their relationship, many were upset to discover that they had shared several kisses and even had sex as part of the storyline.
“I can’t handle this whole Lila/Five thing. I really can’t. Why are they doing this? I want to cry, throw up, scream and forget about it,” wrote one user on X.
Another fan of the show said: ‘Five and Lila are in love and I’m feeling a little dizzy.’

While a third demanded an apology, writing: ‘We need an apology from the writers of The Umbrella Academy for whatever atrocity happened between Five and Lila… I’m cringing so hard right now.’
Several fans explained on social media that they would have been happy if Five and Lila had simply ended up being best friends, rather than lovers, adding that Lila and her husband’s dynamic seemed perfect in previous seasons.
Fans were furious with X, with one saying: “I can’t BELIEVE the storyline between Five and Lila… no one asked for it so why did it happen? It’s honestly ruined the show for me. I’m devastated.”
Another wrote: ‘The writers were so desperate to create a relationship for Five with Lila that they decided to forget and change everything about their past just to fit into their ridiculous NEW narrative.’
The show’s creator, Steve Blackman, made the creative decision knowing it could divide fans.
Speaking to Netflix, she said: “I felt like Five had to have a love story. I mean, he’s a 64-year-old man in an 18-year-old’s body. So we thought he could have a love story. And I thought, ‘How can he have a love story? He’s not the kind of man who’s going to date.'”
“I thought Five needed to be with someone, whether it was a boy or a girl. We thought we had a chance with Lila. And we went for it. I don’t know how the fans are going to take it.”
Steve added that he thought it was important for the pair to kiss because of their difficult dynamic, adding that they are “extreme opposites and they hate each other” but are also “remarkably similar.”
Despite the age difference, fans were still sad to see the end of the show that first premiered five years ago and many weren’t ready to let the characters go.
But the show’s stars celebrated the finale in style and Elliot Page, who leads the cast, looked dapper as he attended the season four premiere of The Umbrella Academy.
The 37-year-old actor appeared in good spirits on the black carpet, arriving at the event in a cream blazer and matching pants on the red carpet on Monday.
“I went and had them together for seven and a half years, almost eight years together, to see if something would grow. And it did. By the time they kissed, they were so sweet in that moment,” she said.
“You could tell they were going to be together. We didn’t let them rehearse the kiss. We got it to the point right before the kiss and then let them do it on the day of the kiss and it was perfect.”
Despite the shock of the new relationship, fans were still thrilled as the “best show of all time” kicked off its final season on Thursday.
Fans took to X and wrote, “The first episode of Umbrella Academy season 4 was the best. Let’s hope the next 5 are just as good. I’m not ready to say goodbye.”
Another said: ‘I’m so excited, but sad at the same time, because that means there will be no more Umbrella Academy after this.’

But the show’s stars celebrated the finale premiere in style and Elliot Page, who leads the cast, looked dapper as he attended the season four premiere of The Umbrella Academy in Los Angeles on Monday.
The 37-year-old actor appeared in good spirits on the black carpet, arriving at the event in a cream blazer and matching trousers.
The star, who plays Viktor Hargreeves on the show, also wore a mint green shirt along with a matching tie.
