SAI SANKOH

Sai Sankoh launched her eponymous fashion brand in November of 2018.

The designer is native from Sierra Leone in West Africa and is deeply inspired by the glamour of the Old Hollywood Era.

‘Everyone must own a Sai Sankoh Kaftan this summer because it is comfortable, vibrant, soft, elegant, and one of the easiest things you can style,’ said the former writer.

Her kaftans are made and produced in India, and most of them are one size fits all.

‘Our signature style is the Goddess kaftan, which is voluminous and just floats when you walk.

‘Those fit everyone, and if you want to accentuate your waist, just tuck it in your pants or put a belt around it and you are good to go.

‘I tried to keep every woman’s body shape in mind when creating my pieces,’ said the beauty.

'I live for colors and prints,' said the designer. Pictured: Dahlia Goddess Kafta, $295; saisankoh.com

On hot summer days, Sai recommends her short silk kaftans or shirt dresses.

‘I would throw on some shorts and fold the sleeves of the shirt dress for a fun and chic look.’

For those wanting all out drama (in the best way possible!) look, Sai’s kaftans paired with  coordinating pants (size 0-22) are a must.

‘I live for colors and prints,’ said the designer. ‘All our prints are custom made, so every-time you are wearing a Sai Sankoh piece, I feel you are wearing a piece of art.

‘Since we have been in quarantine, whenever I feel in need of a confidence boost or a happiness boost, I throw on one of my pieces and it works each time.’

Her new collection, Portrait of a Lady, launched July 1. ‘This collection was inspired by my travels to Italy and Africa, my motherland as well.’

Pushing her creative boundaries as a designer, she included separates and gowns that could be used for editorial shoots or worn on the red carpet.

When rocking a bold, colorful kaftan, not much else is needed.

‘I think the kaftan does all the talking, just strut through life and own the compliments,’ revealed Sai.

The entrepreneur teams her designs with open-toe mules or slides and statement accessories like oversized sunglasses, a belt or a handbag.

She recommends completing the look with a piece of jewelry for a touch of glamour.

‘Kaftans are the perfect summer vibe: cool, sexy, and comfortable.

‘We are our sexiest when we feel good and comfortable in our own skin, kaftans bring out your Goddess super powers,’ said Asa.

Asa designs her garments for all body types. ‘An 18 year old fashionista and a 95 year old grandma will both look like Goddesses in our pieces.’

According to the Persian beauty who formerly starred on the reality hit show Shah’s of Sunset, there is no article of clothing more glamorous than a kaftan.

‘I like to wear our long desert kaftans – they are sheer and I wear them with boy shorts and sports bra.’

One of the best things about the loose fitting garment is its versatility. ‘You can wear one to a red carpet event or a wedding, but also to glam-lounge on your couch, said Asa.

‘I design our kaftans for the modern woman but inspired by my Goddess ancestors. The kaftan is the only garment that has been worn for thousands of years.’

The star’s latest collection, the Mykonos Beach Party, includes ruched mini skirts, cropped front-tie blouses, silk scarves and a high-low hem dress.

Asa likes to pair her offerings with sandals or open-toed strappy heels, LOTS of gold jewelry or chunky tribal jewelry, a clutch or a giant beach bag, hat and big shades.

Camilla Franks founded her namesake brand in 2005 in Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

She launched her collection with beautifully made luxurious kaftans embellished with never-before-seen crystal work inspired by her travels to far off destinations.

‘Travel is the cornerstone of our prints and collections each season,’ said the Australian designer. ‘My creative inspiration is travel – the unexpected and the unknown.’

Since its inception the brand has expanded to swimwear, home goods, accessories, footwear and more. They also opened two US boutiques in Miami and California.

Every Camilla piece is hand-cut, every crystal is applied with precision and every print is placed by hand.

Like precious works of art, the Australian designers creations are considered works of art and collector’s items that have garnered a cult following.

There’s even a Facebook fan page devoted to Camilla lovers who buy, sell and swap their pieces worldwide.

‘As a designer there’s a real sense of pride in seeing a woman find her inner Goddess,’ she said. ‘At Camilla, our vision is to awaken the adventurous heart that resides within all of us.’

‘The kaftan represents where I began, and I love that. It was one of my original designs and, even though we’ve evolved, it’s still the signature piece of the brand. It’s how my intricate prints can be truly celebrated in all their glory,’ shared Camilla.

‘Wearing a Camilla kaftan is just as much about the beauty of the piece with its individual story, colors and embellishments, as it is about being a part of our tribe, which is all inclusive and empowering.

‘Whether she’s the young, boho queen who’s styled her kaftan with cowdy (cowboy) boots and a gilet (sleeveless jacket) at the festival, the mum at school pick up who stands out in the sea of activewear, the glamour girl striding through the crowd like a rockstar in a flowing masterpiece or the grandmother who refuses to grow old and conform – ALL women can share a wild kind of joy in rocking their Camilla kaftans.’

'Camilla has always been about comfort and ease, and that essence translates so well into this current time, but we are also very much about expressing all aspects of femininity and individuality'

‘All Camilla pieces can be worn in a myriad of ways. When I design a garment, I imagine something both extraordinary and versatile. A piece you can wear to celebrate YOU.’

The iconic Round Neck Kaftan ($649) can be worn haltered, one-shouldered, as a cape or as a skirt, short, long, or even strapless.

To help with styling cues during lockdown, the brand has created Virtual Angel Appointments, where you can enjoy a virtual styling session from the comfort of your home.

You’ll be connected to one of their Styling Angels who will help you discover the label’s latest pieces, demonstrate adventurous outfit ideas, and offer individual styling advice.

‘Our kaftans can be transformed to fit each customer’s unique shape via knots, tuck, or accessories – including Camilla styling magnets.

‘The Camilla kaftan can be worn boho and loose, you can cinch in the silhouette with a belt buckled at the waist, or you can tie knots in the fabric to shorten the length.

‘You can even try the famous Camilla “knicker-tucks” – that’s one of our favorites! (and that is if you wear knickers!) Explore our online Style Guide to discover all of the famous Camilla styling tips and tricks!’

More is always more, according to the designer.

‘We encourage our tribe to be bold, revel in their own identity and connect with the adventures we’ve embedded in the prints. It’s about letting your own personality dance in a print that really speaks to you, be it a dramatic floral, a wild animal-inspired print or something whimsical and romantic.

‘Get creative with it. Match or clash prints by layering on separate pieces such as a cape, a kimono, a fun bomber jacket or one of our ultra-soft patterned knits.’

Each kaftan silhouette can be made casual for a beach day, edgy for the street or dressed up for more special occasions with a few key accessories.

‘Our iconic Embellished Velvet Slippers ($329) can make you feel like Snow White or Cinderella.

‘On the other side, our Flight of Amun-ra Heel Buckle Boot ($799) or leopard-printed Fire At Night Heel Buckle Boot ($799) can give a kaftan more of a street feel and harden the look.

‘I also love to wear my kaftans with a high-top sneaker for a comfy day in the design room or on an inspiration trip.

‘For a night of “Sex and The City” style, I love the drama of a heel!’

Camilla believes that accessorizing is an individual playground.

A belt is the perfect way to highlight the waist and create an hourglass silhouette, Camilla suggests her Wide Double Buckle Belt ($399) and the Skinny Double Wrap Belt ($249).

For a bad hair day, a Printed Silk Scarf ($279) or Headband ($79) makes the designer feel instantly glamorous and it takes two minutes to tie a turban or a knotted wrap to create drama.

Her current collection, Once Upon A Time, was inspired by travels through the mythical realm rather than the physical.

‘In 2018, I had my wings clipped. I wasn’t able to travel for inspiration as I normally do so I turned to another form of escapism. I took inward journeys exploring spiritual, creative healing, my own dreams and the wonderful world of fairy tales.

‘My little girl Luna reintroduced me to the magical world of fairy tales once again. Rich with chaos, beauty and illusion, the scenes that unfold in the prints pay tribute to the tales entrenched deep within our memories since childhood.

‘There’s something about fairy tales that continue to captivate us well after our youth. With all their mysteries and nuances, they are stories that resonate with the collective, even with these wonderfully absurd and eerie elements that we know can’t be real.’

‘Go deep into the forest of a fairytale and you will always find the magic and that’s what this collection is all about.

‘It’s magical, dreamy, luxurious and opulent. And who doesn’t want to feel like a princess, goddess or a beautiful warrior queen?’
