Terrifying footage captured the moment an SUV careened across a busy motorway after a motorist collided with the vehicle while trying to overtake it.

The shocking incident occurred along the M5 motorway in Sydney.

Another car’s dashcam showed a silver Holden Commodore speeding in the far left lane.

A white Renault SUV was travelling on the other side of the four-lane road when the driver began to merge.

The Holden weaved between two cars before merging into the same lane the SUV was moving into.

The rear of the Holden collided with the front of the SUV, causing the vehicle to roll over several times along the motorway.

The driver of the Holden lost control of the vehicle before it crashed into the barrier.

The collision forced the vehicles behind to stop.

Images of the horrific accident were shared on Facebook, where social media users expressed their shock.

“That’s scary,” wrote one.

“The number of accidents caused by people trying to overtake on the inside lanes must be huge!” added another.

Others criticised the Holden driver for endangering the safety of motorists.

‘The Commodore is definitely wrong, but this is an extreme case of drivers not keeping left unless they are passing,’ one wrote.

“The Commodore’s driver has no defense,” wrote another.

“The white car is literally overtaking, following the correct use of the right lane,” added a third.

One person chimed in: “That’s driving insanely and without any consideration.”

The Holden driver was initially travelling in a lane that led to a motorway exit.

New South Wales road safety regulations state that drivers must not enter the right lane unless they are overtaking.

These rules apply to drivers travelling on motorways and roads where the speed limit is higher than 80 km/h.

Motorists are permitted to pass on the left when traveling on a multi-lane highway and it is safe to do so.

Drivers may also overtake from the left if the vehicle indicates that it is going to turn right or make a U-turn.

Motorists can be given three demerit points and fined up to $362 for committing a passing violation.
