In a recent episode of Game changing radio On the podcast, Paul Dowsley, the first producer of The Kyle & Jackie O Show, shared the surprising secret behind Kyle’s achievements.

Dowsley was part of the team that won a prime breakfast spot for the 2DayFM show in 2005.

He said he believed much of the duo’s success was due to Kyle continually repeating three words to bosses: “I don’t care.”

Paul and Craig Bruce, who was the show’s content director at the time, detailed a series of incidents where Kyle flipped the script on what was expected of conventional breakfast radio hosts.

Craig recalled that Kyle scolded him off air after the jock kept the live chats going for more than 20 minutes.

“I don’t look at the clock when the (segment) happens, man,” Kyle was saying.

‘I’m trying to stay in the moment. If the content is doing well, I don’t care how long the news takes. I don’t mind.’

Craig added that he had a very specific vision for how the breakfast radio show should work, a vision that Kyle quickly threw out the window.

“I had all these paradigms that were set about what a show should sound like and what a breakfast show should do, and Kyle just challenged and stomped on every one of them,” he said. And thank God it was.

“I remember talking to him about the practicalities of traffic being 20 minutes late and we would say a motorway is blocked and when we broadcast it, it’s not.

Kyle didn’t care. “I don’t care, that’s someone else’s problem,” he said. “I don’t mind”.’

But after the show launched in Melbourne last year, KIIS FM management has been transforming the show to make it more accessible to the new market.

In November, it was announced that Kyle would scale back his signature graphic sexual content in a bid to appeal to the Melbourne market.

“Sexual content was actually a small part of the show,” ARN content director Duncan Campbell told Mumbrella.

“Because it was graphic, it got everyone’s attention, but (Kyle) took it away, actually.

‘It’s still sexual content. But not the graphic sexual content it once had.

Campbell told the outlet that Kyle was the one who “came to the table” to tone down the graphic content and is passionate about winning over Melbourne.

‘(Kyle) wants to win in Melbourne. There is no doubt about that,’ he added.
