An explosion occurred, the third in a week, on Wednesday night, Thursday, near the Golden Temple, the sacred site of the Sikhs in the Indian city of Amritsar (north), according to the Indian police Thursday.

The authorities said that the weak explosion occurred around 00:00, explaining that there were no reports of injuries, noting that the cause of the explosion was unknown.

“The area is completely cordoned off and a forensic team is working there,” said police chief Nonihal Singh.

The security forces said that five people were arrested Thursday, without adding any details.

The previous two explosions, which occurred on Saturday night and then Monday morning, resulted in one injured person. The police did not reveal the cause of these explosions.

The golden temple, built amidst a vast artificial lake, is sacred to Sikhs around the world. It witnessed violence, especially when Indian special forces stormed it in 1984 to expel Sikh fighters who were occupying it.

Authorities in Punjab state arrested a Sikh separatist preacher in the north of the state at the end of April after a month-long manhunt, which led to demonstrations and vandalism by individuals outside.

Amritpal Singh, who is in his 30s, has been known in recent months for his demand for the establishment of the Khalistan state, which the separatists in Punjab want to establish.
