The experts from the Australian consumer group of consumers CHOICE have shared an alphabetical list of items that you can and cannot place in the dishwasher – and it may surprise some.
In a long, coherent table, the kitchen professionals outlined each item, whether it was considered safe to include it or not, and a brief explanation of why.
“Here’s a list of exactly what you can and cannot safely wash in your dishwasher, so you’ll never have to wonder if your great aunt’s silver-plated teaspoons will survive the cycle,” they wrote online.
Experts from the Australian customer group CHOICE have recently shared an alphabetical list of items that you can and cannot do in the dishwasher
Although thin wine glasses, wooden spoons and cast iron are often excluded from the dishwasher, many may be shocked to discover that you can safely wash non-battery-operated breast pump parts, makeup brushes with plastic or metal handles, and dog toys in the dishwasher.
Other items that also received the sign of approval from the experts were Lego pieces, kitchen sponges, and even house keys that do not run on batteries.
“Instead of dumping your limp kitchen sponge and buying a new one, you can give it a new life by letting it run through your dishwasher,” the experts said.

“Instead of pouring your limp kitchen sponge and buying a new one, you can give it a new life by letting it run through your dishwasher,” the experts wrote.
At the other end of the spectrum, items that are considered unsafe to put in the dishwasher are fine porcelain, chef’s knives and blenders.
Surprisingly, the experts have also indicated that you cannot place clothing and tools in the dishwasher, because alkaline cleaning agents can reduce the life of fabrics and promote corrosion of contaminated tools, which may cause them to explode.
Since dishwashers have become one of the most common household appliances in the modern world, it is no wonder that people have tried to wash a series of strange items in the machine.
Surprisingly, the experts have also indicated that you cannot place clothing and tools in the dishwasher
“Items contaminated with wax, cigarette ash, poison, mineral oils, wet paints, and oiled utensils should never end up in your dishwasher because contaminants are left behind and re-deposited with future loads,” they explained.
“Likewise, objects contaminated by solvents or flammable liquids can explode in a dishwasher, so wash them (carefully) by hand instead.”
