A Texas high school football team from the Houston area was reported after they were seen performing a strange post-game activity on their opponents in handshake line.
Willis High School athletes were seen shaking hands with Cleveland High School football players during last Friday’s game. On the other side was a belt, where they whipped their opponents’ butts.
The message was that the Wildkats beat Cleveland so clearly, 77-0 to be exact, that they deserved more cheers. It’s part of a broader viral movement called the BTA Challenge, whose acronym stands for “belt to a**.”
Both school districts and parents condemned the behavior, and the Willis Independent School District suspended several players from the team after reviewing the incident, according to the Houston Chronicle.
“We are deeply disappointed by the unsportsmanlike conduct displayed by some of our football players following last week’s game against Cleveland,” the Willis ISD statement read.
A video appeared on the Internet in which Willis Wildkat’s football players whipped their opponents with a belt.
Willis suspended several players from his football team for only half of the next game
‘This behavior does not reflect the values of our district and we are committed to ensuring it does not happen again. We have been in communication with the (University Interscholastic League) and have submitted our proposed disciplinary actions for review.’
The UIL is the governing body for Texas high school sports and has yet to impose supplemental discipline on players or the school.
‘While we await their decision on additional sanctions, the athletes involved have already faced consequences. They will be suspended for the first half of tomorrow’s game, must perform community service and have been subjected to disciplinary measures during soccer practice.
‘We do not tolerate this behavior and are taking active steps to prevent incidents of this type in the future. “We want to express our deepest sympathy to the athletes, coaches, parents and community of Cleveland ISD.”
Some are unhappy with only a half-half suspension for some of the Wildkats, who enter this week’s game at 5-0.
“I think more than half a one-game suspension, maybe the rest of the season, some counseling,” said Mary Almaguer, mother of a Cleveland High School student. Khou.
Cleveland ISD issued its own statement regarding the situation.
“The district is aware of a video circulating on social media involving the Willis High School varsity football team and their inappropriate actions toward our varsity football team following last Friday night’s game.”
‘Please know that CISD addressed this situation earlier this week. Superintendent McCanless has personally spoken with the superintendent of Willis ISD and official complaints have been filed with the UIL and DEC. “CISD does not endorse unsportsmanlike conduct and will continue to take appropriate action in the future.”
