With the resounding success of the Mario movie now in theaters, The Super Mario Bros. movie is said to pass the $1 billion mark at the box office this weekend.
According to the site Box Office Mojo Which monitors the state of cinema in terms of sales, it is estimated that a movie that enters its fourth week from the time of its release will pass this target by the end of this week.
The film, co-produced by Illumination and Nintendo, is the biggest movie of 2023, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania coming in second and John Wick sequel the third for movies released in 2023.
Overall, the second best movie of the year is Avatar: The Way of Water, although the movie was first released in late 2022.
A huge factor affecting the box office this weekend was the film’s release in Nintendo’s home country of Japan, where Japanese cinemas didn’t get the film until April 28, almost a month after its international release.
Mario series creator Shigeru Miyamoto says The Super Mario Bros. movie has even exceeded his expectations as he spoke to the Japanese press before the movie premiered in Nintendo’s home country and talked about the film’s overall performance, which he rated as optimistic.
