Famous progressive Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raised eyebrows by removing her pronouns from her X account.
The move by Squad lawmaker, 35, seen as one of the most liberal members of Congress, was seen by some as a sign that the cultural tide is turning following Donald Trump’s election victory.
Journalist Benjamin Ryan said Records show that AOC removed her “she/her” pronouns sometime between August 3, 2023 and May 28, 2024.
Critics called her a hypocrite, noting that just two years ago AOC apologized to followers for not having pronouns in her Instagram bio, claiming they had “fallen off” without her realizing it.
Sharp-eyed conservatives have mocked New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez after she quietly removed her pronouns from her X account
The New York lawmaker removed “she/her” from her bio, and others noticed she also changed her nickname from the genderless “representative” to “congresswoman”
Conservatives were quick to ridicule AOC after it was realized she had removed the pronouns from her account bio. Some also noted that she changed her nickname from the genderless “Representative” to “Congresswoman” when she removed her pronouns.
Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has frequently clashed with AOC in Congress, demanded she “explain herself.”
“Why, after years of shoving gender lies and crazy ideologies down people’s throats, did she remove her pronouns?” Greene tweeted.
Conservative commentator Paul Szypula told his 250,000 followers that he believes she is pandering to Hispanic voters after the voter bloc dramatically switched to Donald Trump during the election.
“If you’re wondering why AOC ditched her pronouns in her biography, it may have something to do with the mass exodus from the Democratic Party by Hispanic voters,” he argued.
‘Many have conservative values and are not happy with the gender ideology. They find low prices and strong borders important.’
Others drew a connection between her removal of the pronouns and Democrats’ efforts to use the term “Latinx” — a gender-neutral alternative to Latino and Latina — which many Hispanic voters said they found offensive in recent years.
“This election killed the woke era,” another added.
It comes days after AOC was criticized by Republicans for her first public response to Trump’s victory, as she was criticized for “fear mongering.”
The New York lawmaker warned her followers that the United States under Trump may be entering an era of “fascism and authoritarianism.”
“We are, I believe, at a time when there are, let’s say, colleagues in the history of mass movements of people mobilizing to protect each other in times of fascism and authoritarianism,” AOC said.
“And this is the era we are about to enter.”
Ocasio-Cortez has long been a supporter of transgender rights, including so-called gender-affirming care for children, and transgender girls competing in women’s sports.
But Democrats’ more extreme positions were blamed for losing Kamala Harris massive votes in the recent elections.
An ad supporting taxpayer-funded gender reassignment operations for illegal migrant detainees was played repeatedly by Team Trump.
The claim by many Democrats that opposing hormones for trans children or banning trans girls from joining female sports teams was transphobic further alienated centrists.
Immigration and inflation were the issues that ultimately tilted the election for Donald Trump, but the Democrats’ unpopular stance has now led to a reckoning within the party.
“Donald Trump has spoken about using the military against American citizens he considers his domestic political enemies. Authoritarians and people he is close to, and strongmen aboard such regimes, it is not uncommon to jail political dissidents or legislative opponents,” the congressman said.
“This is the world we can very realistically enter.”
