The analytics for this game were a disaster for the Canucks. They lost the scoring opportunity battle tied 21-18 and only generated two high-danger chances compared to the 11 they lost. From an analytical perspective, this was not only one of the worst performances of the season, but also possibly during the Rick Tocchet era.
As for the heat map, it was a disaster. Vancouver was unable to protect the front of the net, resulting in three goals against. From failing to block players to making questionable decisions in the defensive zone, the Canucks couldn’t find a way to stop New York.
To summarize, one player who had a positive night was Elias Pettersson. He created one of Vancouver’s best even-strength high-danger opportunities, while his 50% even-strength SF% ranked second on the team. Pettersson also led the team in shots with six, took a penalty, took two shots and blocked a shot. While he didn’t end up on the scoresheet, he was easily one of the Canucks’ best players and after a slow start, he’s starting to look like his old self.
