The Simpsons have proven again that they must have a crystal ball to predict future events, this time previewing a special performance nearly 30 years before the collaboration was first announced.
In the penultimate episode of the seventh season of the successful American comedy The Simpsons, which aired in 1996, the Californian rap group Cypress Hill announced a concert with the London Symphony Orchestra.
In the episode Homerpalooza, Homer takes his family to the Hullabalooza rock festival. a play lollapalooza, in an attempt to prove their street cred to them.
Security allows the family to go backstage, where they witness the beginning of a magical but unusual collaboration between Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra.
This summer, the legendary rap trio will actually share the stage with the London Symphony Orchestra, performing a special performance of their album Black Sunday.
Another Simpsons prediction has come true almost 30 years later, when Cypress Hill joins forces with the London Symphony Orchestra. The joke appeared in this episode: Homerpalooza in 1996.
Cypress Hill, who have announced that they will perform at the Royal Albert Hall this summer with the London Symphony Orchestra, bringing to life a joke from The Simpsons from 1996.
During The Simpsons episode, a bemused backstage coordinator asked: ‘Hey bands, who’s playing with the London Symphony Orchestra?’
No one responded, much to his annoyance, and he continued: ‘Come on people, someone ordered the London Symphony Orchestra, possibly while high!’
He then accused the hip hop group of ordering musicians to play with them, saying: ‘Cypress Hill, I’m looking in your direction.’
The Californian collective, in a panic, whispered to each other: ‘Hey, should we ask for an orchestra? What’s up with this orchestra? Where does this orchestra come from?
A member of the trio continued: ‘No one told me about this man. We have to do something’, before responding to the coordinator: ‘Yes, yes, we think we did it.’
Addressing the orchestra, who were dressed in black tuxedos and boots, he asked: —Do you know Insane in the Brain?
The orchestra’s violinist admitted: “We know mostly classical music… but we could try.”
Their collaboration impressed Marge, who smiled: “I really like this.”
After the episode in the mid-90s, fans of the popular rap group hoped that the on-screen joke would one day come true and almost three decades later they have confirmed it.
Cypress Hill said: “We are delighted to be performing with the London Symphony Orchestra in such a prestigious venue as the Royal Albert Hall. It is a dream come true, a collaboration that only The Simpsons could have predicted.”
The group will perform with the orchestra on July 10 at the Royal Albert Hall.
Tickets go on sale at 10am on March 27, where fans can watch the California collective perform songs from their ’90s album Black Sunday, among other hits.
Kathryn McDowell DBE, chief executive of the LSO, said: “After years of mocking this on social media, many fans may have begun to believe it would just be a pipe dream, but the LSO is delighted to finally join Cypress Hill in on stage and in person. And we hope to create an unforgettable musical moment!
“Many thanks to the creators of The Simpsons for the idea and to AEG Artistic and PolyArts for making this all happen.”
