Patrick Warburton, best known for his portrayal of Elaine Benes’ on-again, off-again boyfriend David Puddy on the hit ’90s sitcom, sported a very different look when he sat down for an interview on the Today show.

The comedy star is in Australia for Metro Comic-Con and spoke about his iconic role as the “jock” boyfriend of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character.

Patrick, sporting a bushy 1980s-style mustache and a black baseball cap, said he had always been a fan of Seinfeld before being cast on the comedy show.

‘I remember sitting on the couch watching it with my wife, we watched it religiously on Thursdays, and I remember looking at her and saying ‘why can’t I be on this show?’

‘Two weeks later I went to read for Jerry (Seinfeld) and Larry David and it went well and they hired me.’

“It was just one episode. They liked the character and brought him back,” he added.

Warburton also explained that contractual obligations with another network prevented him from being a more regular character on the show.

“They asked me about availability and I couldn’t do it because I was on a CBS show at the time and they wouldn’t let me do a show on another network,” he explained.

“It was frustrating, but then they cancelled it and I came back for the ninth and final season.”

Patrick played the rude Puddy in 10 episodes of the sitcom, which aired from 1989 to 1998.

He first appeared in season six as Jerry’s mechanic and Elaine’s current boyfriend.

A running joke on the show is that Elaine and Puddy break up and get back together so frequently that it becomes inconsequential.

In the first episode of season nine, the couple breaks up, gets back together, and breaks up again, all during the course of an international flight and a taxi ride to the airport.

Since then, Warburton has become an accomplished voice actor for animated shows such as Family Guy, The Emperor’s New Groove and Scooby-Doo.

Most recently, he appeared as Lemony Snicket in the Netflix adaptation of the children’s book series, A Series of Unfortunate Events.
