Royal family gather at Windsor Castle for the first Easter Sunday service of Charles’s reign

  • The service will take place in St George’s Chapel for the first time since the Queen’s death

The Prince and Princess of Wales have arrived at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle with all three of their children for the first Easter Sunday service of King Charles’s reign.

The royal family will be in attendance at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Berkshire Castle for the traditional Easter Mattins.

A staple on the royal calendar, last year’s event saw the now Prince and Princess of Wales present in the spring sunshine with their two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

It’s also likely to be a moving moment for the royal family, with the 15th-century chapel serving as the late Queen’s final resting place and the Easter Sunday service the first since her death.

Elizabeth II is buried in the church’s small King George VI Memorial Chapel, next to Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, and her late parents George VI and the Queen Mother, with their four names inscribed on a new black stone slab in the floor .

The Windsors gathered in St George’s in September for the televised service of the monarch and the royal matriarch and then in private after her state funeral at Westminster Abbey.

The late Queen missed Easter Sunday service last April due to mobility issues.

Charles, as monarch, succeeded his mother to become the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

In less than a month, he will be crowned with Camilla, the Queen Consort, in a religious service at Westminster Abbey.

As Prince of Wales, Charles often delivered an Easter message and last year highlighted the millions of displaced people “wounded by the past, afraid of the future”, but this year is unlikely to reflect his new role as head of state.
