In an upcoming biography titled Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, author Elizabeth Beller delves into the life of JFK Jr.’s wife.
The princess died in a fatal car accident during a high-speed chase by photographers in Paris.
Carolyn was furious about the royal’s passing, especially since she herself had had problems with the paparazzi.
Elizabeth wrote: “Carolyn tried to get John to call Princes William and Harry to offer her condolences when it emerged that Diana hoped her children would emulate John’s modesty in the face of media obsession.”
However, JFK Jr. did not see the benefit of calling the children at first because “he did not know them and thought their situations were very different.”
The extract read: “He had known [Princess Diana] once or twice, and the fact that she had died while being chased by paparazzi, he was aware of the fact that her [he and Carolyn’s] Their lives were becoming overloaded with attention and he was upset.
‘Carolyn’s suggestion that I call them was lovely. He was, by all indications, a lovely and kind person, but perhaps that moment was too difficult for him to be able to reach out and say something to someone who had just lost their parents in a very public and dramatic way.

Elizabeth revealed: ‘The press attention really terrified her. There was a vulnerability. And I think in some ways the press attention and scrutiny struck a chord and stole a lot of the joy out of her.
“She had a lot of compassion, she was very loving and a good friend.”
