I was excited to learn such an interesting, yet inconsequential, detail about what our world looks like. While testing Sony Playstation 5 ProI experienced that same feeling over and over again.
Generally, video game graphics have reached the coveted point of “good enough.” When Horizon Zero Dawn It came out in 2017, years before the PS5 came out, no one thought its images were missing. Nothing of the sort. However, when Sony released a remaster of this less-than-a-decade-old game that arguably no one asked for, it was… actually pretty good.

Instead of focusing on things like adding more pixels or polygons, today’s flexibility comes from adding more stuff to the game world or get more frames with the images you have. The reality is more complicated. Just as gases expand to fill the volume of their containers, video games tend to expand to fill the amount of processing power available to them. Therefore, although some games are capable of running in 4K at 60 frames per second at least from the PS4 Proit is still not the default today. Each console is capable of running Stardew Valley in 4K at 60 fps. But it is much more difficult to represent a photorealistic, covered in foliage, post apocalyptic sandbox.
Developers have to make decisions about what to include and what to remove when designing their virtual worlds. Is it important to have more trees and bushes? Or should there be more people walking around? What should a player see if look in the mirror? These kinds of things may seem unimportant until you enter a bustling space metropolis that it feels like a ghost town.
Even more immersive
While testing the PS5 Pro, I found many of the games I played more lively and complete. Not because there were necessarily more pixels, but because the developers didn’t budget their effects as precisely. In spider man 2For example, switching from Performance mode to Fidelity mode on the original PS5 would add more cars on the roads, more pedestrians on sidewalks, and more scattered trees and bushes. On the PS5 Pro, however, there was more of all of these things in Performance mode than on the regular PS5 in Fidelity mode.
