Sony has announced as part of the second quarter earnings report that it sold 2.8 million PlayStation 4 consoles between July and September. Since the company achieved exactly 100 million in sales three months ago, the total now stands at 102.8 million, meaning the PS4 has sold out the original PlayStation.
As you may remember, the PlayStation was a huge success. It sold 102.5 million units, far more than competitors such as the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64, and so far it was the second best-selling home console of all time behind the PS2, which sold a possibly unrepeatable 155 million. Also note: the total of the Nintendo Wii of 101.6 million was also exceeded this quarter.
Achieving this level of popularity with the PS4 is a huge achievement for Sony, but this console cycle is clearly declining. Sony's gaming revenue is down 17 percent on an annual basis, with a drop in profit of 28 percent, which is no surprise, as the company plans to release the PlayStation 5 for the next holiday season.
However, the PS4 is not yet completely ready. Important exclusive games on the horizon include The Last of Us Part II, Spirit of Tsushima, and the long awaited next week Death Stranding.
