Peter Helliar, right, gave Carrie Bickmore, left, a playful jab when she privately told him she was leaving The Project last month.
She added: “And then you texted me and said, ‘I think I was a little bit shocked.'”
Meanwhile, Helliar, who also left the show this month, said she was happy with her “incredible” decision to leave.
“You make the decision, you question yourself for a moment, and you know you have to announce it,” he told Carrie.
Speaking with Helliar on her Hit Network radio show Carrie & Tommy, Carrie recalled how she took him and Waleed into a closet to tell them the news before announcing it live. Carrie said that Helliar’s reaction was “The show will be fine!”
‘…[but] doing it last night felt really lovely,” he explained.
However, Helliar said he made a crucial mistake that night.
“Once I got the first words out, I thought, ‘Why didn’t I autocue this? Why did I think I could riff this?'” he explained.
Carrie will star in her final show on November 30. Sarah Harris, who previously hosted for Studio 10, will now take on the role.
Lisa Wilkinson (pictured) also announced her resignation from the show this month.
Sarah recently told Stellar magazine: ‘I didn’t see it coming. And I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.
“It’s an incredible opportunity to put myself in some pretty big shoes and be a part of the next chapter of The Project.
‘I can’t wait to learn more and have fun with Waleed and the team. This is one of the biggest jobs on television and it feels like a once-in-a-lifetime concert.’
The network confirmed that Sarah Harris (pictured) will replace Carrie as host of the show alongside Waleed Aly five nights a week.
