King Frederick honored his wife Queen Mary with a rare and priceless gift on the morning of her 56th birthday, amid rumors that their relationship is in trouble.
The King honored his Australian-born Queen with the Grand Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Dane.
This honor has been granted sparingly throughout history: today only seven holders of the title remain, including Queen Margaret and Prince Joachim.
The Order of Dannebrog honors faithful servants of the modern Danish state for meritorious civil or military service, for a particular contribution to the arts, sciences or business life, or for working for Danish interests.
Once known as the ‘White Knights’, the order was initially limited to royal men and nobles, before Christian VIII broke tradition in 1840 by bestowing it on his aunt, Queen Maria Sophia Frederikke.
King Frederick honored his wife Queen Mary with a rare and priceless gift on the morning of her 56th birthday, amid rumors that their relationship is in trouble.
The king’s mother, Queen Margaret and her children, Crown Prince Christian, Princess Elizabeth, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, appeared alongside the royal couple.
The royal couple appeared calm as they appeared together on the balcony of Amalienborg Castle in honor of Frederick’s first birthday as king.
Queen Mary dazzled on the balcony in a pink dress with puffed sleeves by Number Ventuno (Number 21), she wore her hair down and wore a simple gold watch, necklace and earrings for the occasion.
Her daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Josephine, wore hand-me-downs, courtesy of their very stylish mother.
Princess Elizabeth wore Zimmermann’s ‘Aliane’ wrap midi dress, valued at $1,100.
While Princess Josephine opted for Paul and Joe Paris’ belted distressed viscose linen dress.
The couple looked more familiar than they had in months, as they waved from the balcony.
The King’s 56th birthday is his first since he assumed the top office.
Both princesses chose to keep their accessories light and their hair down in imitation of their mother’s relaxed look.
Royal watchers seemed pleased to see the popular royal couple holding hands as they smiled at the crowd below.
They shuddered with excitement as the Queen gently walked past her husband in her signature “tactile and carefree” style.
“Congratulations on your birthday, it’s a pleasure to see the whole family on the balcony,” said a woman.

The couple’s relationship has been under the microscope since last November, when the then-Crown Prince was photographed on a night out in Madrid with socialite Genoveva Casanova.
Lecturas reported that, during their night out, Prince Federico and Mrs. Casanova visited a Pablo Picasso exhibition, walked through El Retiro park and then went out to dinner.
Around 7 pm, Readings claimed that both Frederik and Genoveva went to their apartment building separately, and both came out again around 9 pm, two hours later, both had changed their clothes and changed into night clothes. .
In the photos, Genoveva had ditched her elegant belted camel coat in favor of a white shirt, black wide-leg pants, and a black jacket draped over her shoulders.
Meanwhile, Frederik appeared to have changed from a navy blue jacket and brown pants to a white shirt and dark pants with a stylish dark jacket. Once again, they were reported to have left the building separately, but got into the same white car.
The magazine claimed that the couple watched a flamenco show at a Spanish restaurant, El Corral de la MorerĂa, which ended at midnight.
He also claimed that they remained at their table, which had been flanked by two of the Danish prince’s bodyguards, while other customers left, waiters finished their shifts and the lights went out.
Lecturas stated that the couple did not leave the restaurant until 1 a.m., when they went outside and got into a car. In a “courtesy gesture,” Lecturas reports, Prince Frederick opened the car door for his dinner companion.
The following day, the magazine claims that the heir to the Danish throne was taken to the airport by car from where he flew home to Denmark.
