A popular restaurant was closed after a pregnant woman found a dead rat in her soup.
The woman made the horrible discovery while dining with her husband at Xiabu Xiabu, a fast food chain in eastern China, on Thursday.
But when the couple alerted staff about the dead rat, the couple said employees offered them money to abort their baby, according to the Southern China Morning Post.
"If you're worried about the baby, we'll give you 20,000 yuan ($ 3,000) to have an abortion," said the woman's husband, his surname Ma.
Mr. Ma said he was willing to negotiate compensation after his wife completed the checkups at the hospital.
The Office of Market Supervision of the Kuiwen District confirmed that a complaint had been filed regarding the presence of a rat in the soup.
While no traces of rats were detected during an inspection conducted after the complaint, it was found that some vegetable suppliers did not have the correct ratings.
Stagnant water was also found in the food processing areas of the restaurant.
The restaurant has been closed while their procedures are updated.
In a statement published after the incident, the restaurant chain said it has always placed a strong emphasis on food safety and would make the necessary improvements.
