A search was started for a red car that was seen driving away from the scene of three suspected forest fires.

Strike Force Myler was formed to investigate the forest fires in the Castlereagh and Londonderry areas, north of Penrith in Sydney, from December 2019.

The police have released photos of the Toyota Rav 4 from 2002, with yellow and black license plates from New South Wales that were seen in the area at the time.

The car was seen in areas around all three fires before and after they were lit.

Emergency services were called to the roads of Firetrail and Smeeton in Castlereagh after reports of two fires in the area at 2.35 pm on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.

A third forest fire was reported on Wilshire Road, Londonderry at approximately 3.10 p.m.

Firefighters spent several hours fighting the flames, which destroyed 40 hectares of bushland.

The flames were fanned during one of the worst bushfire seasons.
