The desperate search for missing Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez who disappeared in Byron Bay more than three weeks ago has been suspended.

Theo, 18, was last seen when he left the Cheeky Monkey bar in the vacation town on May 31 at about 11 p.m. and has not been seen or heard since.

It is because his father thanked the local community for their support.

Police, volunteers from the state's emergency service and members of the public were accompanied on Friday by police divers, who continued to search in the Tallow Beach area.

The last & # 39; ping & # 39; of Theo & # 39; s phone was recorded on June 1 in the area around the Cape Byron lighthouse.

While the physical search for Theo has been suspended for Saturday and Sunday, investigators will continue to pass on information to the police, a NSW police spokesperson said on Saturday morning.

& # 39; Your warmth and kindness is like a balm in our hearts & # 39 ;, Hayez sent a group for the Byron Bay community on Friday night.

& # 39; You give us strength and confidence. We love you from the earth to the moon (What Theo told me in his bed one night when he was five) … & # 39;

Hayez pleads on Monday for an emotional plea for help and begs the coded chat service WhatsApp to give the police access to his son's latest known conversations.

The company indicated what information they could have, but they had no access to the content of the messages, AAP understands.

The Belgian police also work in Europe to talk to people whom Theo may have contacted in his last known times.

More than $ 70,000 was raised via a GoFundMe page for the Hayez family, part of which was used to help Mr. Hayez fly to Australia.
