No one fears the premature arrival of the Christmas holidays more than me (I don’t even walk past a EM this time of year for fear of listening to Mariah Carey), but there’s a good reason we’re looking for party clothes in early November.
The reason or rather the reasons are Monsoon and Sarah Corbett-Winder, fashion stylist, designer and Instagram influencer.
I’ve long coveted SCW’s wardrobe (to be honest, I’ve long coveted his house, his kids, and his dog too, just like social media).
And now she’s bringing her fun, frivolous aesthetic to our festive wardrobes in collaboration with the high street favorite. A little early for my taste, but in this case I’ll allow it. Because, well, look at this red feather-trimmed two-piece suit (above£69 and pants£79) to start…
How many of us don’t have memories of a Monzón party dress? It used to be the only place you could get intricate embroidery and beautiful beading, on rich, luxurious fabrics. Now I’m in my forties, a mother of three, and I still have the fabulous black slip dress I wore on my 18th birthday.
God, I loved it, and I still love it.
But at some point, the brand disappeared from the radar of fashion editors like me. It was built on a bohemian, artisanal aesthetic and, as competitors adopted similar styles, higher prices and slow design changes meant they had to fight to keep up with those more in tune with “fast fashion.” “.
But now Monsoon has regained its charm. And all three outfits in this new collaboration play an important role.
Your cocktail party outfit is paired with that spectacular red ensemble, and whoever said good things come in small packages lied: the bigger the better with this fantastic brown sequin suit (jacket£120 and pants£95).
The slim fit is sublime and very flattering: a boxy jacket with trousers fitted at the waist that end in wonderful wide legs.
Then there is this olive green velvet bow jumpsuit (£125) – certainly beats an LBD!
And the core range looks better than ever too. They’ve poached Caroline Jackson, a creative at Free People, one of the new bohemian brands that had displaced Monsoon in the first place.
She is now the general creative director of Monsoon for women and children (check out their children’s clothing if you have little people in your life).
Their brief was to “push trending product to put Monsoon back on the map” and they have done exactly that, celebrating their core values whilst making them relevant again.
I love this Anna velvet sequin mini dress with flared sleeves (£150), with its large black satin bow on the back.
And remember that black and white polka dot full skirt dress from this summer? Grazia called it “the dress of the season,” and rightly so, as the entire set of styles blew it away.
Well, for autumn/winter, Monsoon has brought back the same flattering cut in red and leopard print, £130. You can see why it caused such a stir.
A top with a tight-fitting bodice and a fabulous full skirt that will not fail to flatter. Step out of your comfort zone and go for leopard, you won’t regret it, and if you want a little help for your arms, take my style advice and add a party cardigan.
Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, they’ve got big names like supermodel Jade Parfitt on board. I especially love the fabulous metallic midi, £85 and the leopard dress£110 (below), which ticks those essential boho boxes.
Maybe the holiday season should hurry up after all.
