The ostentatious 1990s Portland mansion, located on a 40-acre estate, becomes the city's most expensive home after being put up for sale by the owner of developer Ritz-Carlton for $15 million.

Portland’s most expensive mansion has been privately listed for $15 million.

Walter Bowen, the developer of the new Ritz Carlton hotel and residential tower in downtown Portland, has put his 40-acre property near Forest Park up for sale.

Bowen’s English Tudor mansion, known as English Oak Estate, is the most expensive residential property for sale in Portland. The 16,828-square-foot home is located on a 120-acre development shared by three homeowners.

The second-place property in terms of price is the Tahoma penthouse at the Ritz-Carlton with an asking price of $8,999,000.

The developer purchased the Tudor Revival mansion in 1993. The four-level brick home features Ipe hardwood floors, marble-topped fireplaces, seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms and three powder rooms. Additional features include a tower, slate roof, home theater, guest apartment and fly fishing workshop.

The home, which was completed in 1996, hired Soderstrom Architects to design a home inspired by “the romance of the English countryside,” according to the property description.

The formal living room has beamed ceilings while the dining room has a trio of French doors leading to the gardens.

The 432-square-foot kitchen is designed to accommodate large gatherings with a walk-in pantry and prep kitchen. The kitchen features stainless steel appliances and a temperature-controlled wine cellar.

To reach the two-bedroom master suite, you have the option of ascending the grand staircase with wrought iron balusters or the wood-paneled elevator.

The suite includes three walk-in closets, one with special storage for ties, as well as a corner office, wet bar and balcony.

The two garages have capacity for six cars, while the parking located outside the motor court has capacity for a further 20 vehicles.

Terry Sprague of LUXE Forbes Global Properties listed the property for sale. He said OregonLive that the craftsmanship, from the lamps to the hand-painted murals, emulates the style of a luxury home from a hundred years ago.

“For someone looking for privacy and security and who really understands a heritage-style property, this is one of the most beautiful properties of its kind in the country and unique to Portland,” Sprague said.

Property taxes on the mansion are around $89,000 a year.
