Dessert chains sell pancakes, waffles, and pancakes that contain an amazing amount of calories, sugar, and salt, a study has discovered.

Action on Sugar analyzed 191 different items that were sold in popular restaurants, cafes, and takeaways in shopping centers in London.

The campaign group discovered that some desserts contained nearly 20 teaspoons of sugar and almost all of the adult's recommended daily calorie intake.

It now calls on the government to enforce mandatory color-coded food and calorie labeling on menus and online.

The results showed a salted caramel banoffee pancake from an American themed restaurant. The breakfast club was full of 1,800 calories.

For comparison: a Big Mac from McDonald & # 39; s contains a third of that, about 560 calories.

Official guidelines recommend that men and women consume no more than 2500 and 2000 calories per day, respectively.

The Breakfast Club, with 17 diners in England – especially in London, also topped the sugar content charts.

The Beauregarde pancake from the chain contained 100 g of sugar or 25 teaspoons. For reference, a can of Coca Cola contains around 35 g.

NHS guidelines advise adults not to consume more than 30 g of free sugars every day – added to food and drink.

Dessert necklace My Old Dutch & # 39; s Four Cheese crepe was packed with 8.5 g of salt, most of the analyzed items.

For comparison: a pack of chips with salt and vinegar from Walkers has only 0.53 grams, which means that the crepe has the same amount of salt as about 16 packs.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends adults to consume no more than one teaspoon of salt, or about 5 grams, every day.

A Creams Waffle: Oreos on Mine with Gelato contained no less than 19 teaspoons of sugar, more than two cans of Coca Cola.

Meanwhile, a Mr Pretzels Chocolate Pretzel, often eaten as a snack while shopping, was packed with 930 calories – the same as eighteen KitKat fingers.

Action on Sugar found that only 70 of the products offered complete nutritional information in the store or online.

It analyzed 35 of the products in a laboratory to find out how much sugar, salt and calories were really in it.

In addition to the aforementioned chains, items from chains such as Kaspa's Desserts, Snowflakes Gelato and Wafflemeister were also examined.

Harvester, My Old Dutch, Crepeaffaire, Brewers Fayre, McDonald's and Marks & Spencer Cafe provide nutritional information on their websites, but not on the menus.

Experts say that this means that customers are unable to make an informed decision about their food.

Registered nutritionist Dr. Kawther Hashem said that consumers were left in the dark about how unhealthy eating out can be.

HOW MANY SUGAR IS TOO MUCH?

Advertisements

The amount of sugar that a person must eat per day depends on how old he is.

Children from four to six years old must be limited to a maximum of 19 g per day.

Seven to 10 year olds may not have more than 24 g and children 11 years and older must have 30 g or less.

Meanwhile, the NHS recommends that adults have no more than 30 g of free sugars per day.

Popular snacks contain a surprising amount of sugar and even a single can of Coca Cola (35 g sugar) or a Mars bar (33 g) contains more than the maximum amount of sugar that a child should have a whole day.

Advertisements

A bowl of Frosties contains 24 g of sugar, which means that a 10-year-old who has Frosties for breakfast is likely to have reached his limit the day before they even leave the house.

Children who eat too much sugar run the risk of damaging their teeth, attracting fat and becoming overweight, and getting type 2 diabetes, which increases the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Dr. Hasehm, campaign leader at Action on Sugar at Queen Mary University in London, said: & # 39; It's absurd for supermarkets to be as transparent as possible about what they put into their products, from allergens to calories, but when they eat out we often have no idea what is in our food and drinks.

& # 39; If companies continue to hide their nutritional information, there is little hope for consumers to find healthier options. The Health Minister, Matt Hancock, must now take action to resolve this unfair situation. & # 39;

Professor Graham MacGregor, an expert in cardiovascular medicine at Queen Mary University in London, called on the government to curb restaurants in shopping centers.

Professor MacGregor, who is also president of Action on Sugar, said: & # 39; Because some supermarkets make similar products that also sell well, there is no reason why we don't get better options when we eat out.

"Despite the government's childhood obesity strategy, food and drink in shopping malls and informal eateries are flooded with unhealthy options.

"The Out of Home sector is constantly pouring cold water on plans to do everything to improve our health.

& # 39; We now need both Public Health England and the Department of Health and Social Care to enforce product reformulation so that parents have affordable, healthy food options. & # 39;

The Breakfast Club, founder of The Breakfast Club Cafes, told MailOnline: & The Breakfast Club menu covers the entire spectrum, from everyday healthy dishes such as rye bread avocado to treats such as our pancake and berry dish.

& # 39; Most people have our pancake dishes as desserts with friends and I am not sure it is a surprise that a stack of vanilla cream pancakes and fresh berries has a substantial sugar content.

& # 39; We would like to work with "Action on Sugar" to make the right changes, we are strong proponents of healthy eating and we have recently renewed our menu, which has just become 50 percent vegetarian. The most important thing for us is that the customer has a choice. & # 39;

MailOnline has contacted My Old Dutch, Creams and Mr Pretzels for comments.
