There’s always debate about which films and performers went unappreciated on Oscar night, but wishing the performers at the Academy Awards’ annual In Memoriam segment — which simply requires dying between annual ceremonies — never sits well with fans. .
Arguably topping the list of skips on Sunday night was Charlbi Dean, starring in the 2023 best picture nominee “triangle of sadness”. The 32-year-old South African interpreter died in August after contracting a rare infection called Capnocytophaga.
Also rejected was the summary of In Memoriam Anne Heche, who also died in August after a car accident. The 53-year-old “Donnie Brasco” actor dated famed comedian Ellen DeGeneres, who hosted the Oscars in 2007 and 2014.
Best actor nominees left out of Sunday night’s tribute include Tom Sizemore, star of “Saving Private Ryan,” Paul Sorvino, actor of “Goodfellas,” and Chaim Topol, star of “Fiddler in the roof”, passed away last week at the age of 87.
Sizemore, 61, suffered a fatal brain aneurysm last month. Sorvino’s daughter, actress Mira Sorvino, tweeted in July “the great Paul Sorvino has passed away.”

She tweeted on Sunday, “I for one am filming dad at the Oscars tonight…”
The Brooklyn native was 83 years old.
Stars including Raquel Welch, Ray Liotta, Angela Lansbury and Kirstie Alley were filmed on Sunday, as were composer Burt Bacharach, singer Irene Cara and director Jean-Luc Goddard. The most memorable tribute of the night was John Travolta’s tearful farewell to his “Grease” co-star Olivia Newton-John, whom the actor said — quoting a song from his 1978 musical — would be “hopelessly bonded.”
Newton-John died of breast cancer in August at the age of 73.
The Academy posted a video of the In Memoriam segment on Twitter, where it received harsh criticism.
“Where was Leslie Jordan?” asked one viewer, referring to the 67-year-old “The Help” actor, who died in a traffic accident in October.
Another Twitter user said that Mexican star Ignacio López Tarso, 98, was persona non grata.
“So many people were missing,” complained a spectator.
