Joe Biden has faced protests from his own supporters for ending his re-election campaign at a fundraiser.
But his wife Jill insisted he was “the only person for the job” despite the fallout from their calamitous TV debate.
When the president arrived in the Hamptons in New York, he passed signs of wealthy Democrats reading: “We love you, but it’s time.”
Others included: ‘Please drop out for USA’; ‘Resignation for democracy’; and ‘Thank you, next’, a reference to Ariana Grande’s hit song.
Biden, 81, the oldest US president in history, slurred his words and gave incoherent answers in Thursday night’s election debate with Donald Trump.

Biden has faced protests from his own supporters for ending his re-election campaign at a fundraiser.
It was considered such a disaster that Democrats openly called for Biden to be replaced as the party’s nominee in November.
He attempted to calm anxiety among his followers at the fundraiser, hosted by billionaire Barry Rosenstein and attended by actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.
He said: “It wasn’t my best debate… I understand that. But I’m going to fight harder.”
Top Democrats were trying to talk to Mrs. Biden in the belief that she is the best person to convince her husband to drop out of school.
But after arriving in the Hamptons on Air Force One, the First Lady supported the President.
She told donors: “Joe is not just the right person for the job: he is the only person for the job.”
Biden was with his family yesterday at Camp David, where celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz took their photo. But the meeting, which had been organized before the debate, has now taken on new urgency and meaning.
Democrats have been conducting polls to understand the impact of the debate and whether it will affect the candidates in the elections. A Biden adviser said the only way Biden would resign would be if the data showed she couldn’t beat Trump.
