The newest: Storm pound California with rain and snow

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The latest storms in California (all times local):

7 hours

Wide areas in California are alert to treacherous conditions, because the latest series of storms in the Pacific Ocean is dumping rain and snow.

Flash warnings can be seen in many places during the daytime and some neighborhoods near wildfire burning scars are under evacuation orders.

The Santa Barbara County community of Montecito, which was devastated by a deadly debris stream a year ago, received 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) of rain in 24 hours, but has so far prevented a recurrence of the disaster.

In the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, a flashing flood guard is in place for the area that is being burned by the forest fire that destroyed the city of Paradise in November. The higher parts of the Sierra Nevada have seen snowstorms.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that three people, including a 1-year-old girl, were killed on Tuesday when a car got out of control in heavy rainfall in El Dorado County and crashed into another car. Two other storm-related deaths were previously reported in Northern California.

The last storm in the Pacific in a week-long range is expected to cover an already soaked Californian state and predictors say the state is still at risk for dangerous mudslides in burns and snowstorms in the high Sierras.

The slopes of Southern California, marked by the huge forest fires last year, have kept the rain in recent days, but on Thursday a final downpour is predicted.

Meanwhile, Northern California was hit hard on Wednesday. The authorities say a homeless man in Oakland died when a tree branch fell on him, possibly because he was looking for protection from the rain.

Tens of thousands of Pacific Gas & Electric customers were left without power because the electrical lines deteriorated again.

Forecasters say the state should start drying out on Friday.
