Repeated battles broke out between French anti-government protests and police near the Arc de Triomphe monument in Paris.

Security forces used tear gas and a water cannon to push back demonstrators throwing stones and other objects at them.

The Paris police say that at least 53 people were arrested before and during the protest in the French capital. They have also arrested a number of demonstrators during battles near the Arc de Triomphe.

Armored police vehicles have been set up near the monument to prevent demonstrators from going to the nearby Champs-Elysées. An automobile ban was introduced on the famous avenue.

The actions of Saturday followed during a ninth weekend with yellow vest demonstrations to condemn the economic policies of President Emmanuel Macron, which is seen by demonstrators as a supporter of the rich.

Bourges, the central French city, is a poaching shop to defend itself against possible violence between police and yellow vestactivists, because the national movement is looking for a new phase for its weekly demonstrations.

Paris is also on Saturday night for a ninth weekend of protest against the government. The French government has deployed 80,000 security forces today and Interior Minister Christophe Castaner has threatened hard reprisals against violence.

Online groups had calls for massive protests throughout Bourges all week, but the Paris police said they would not abandon their surveillance, especially around government buildings and the Champs-Elysées, a scene with repeated riots in protests in the past.

The protest movement declined during the festive season, but seems to be resigning, despite concessions by President Emmanuel Macron. Protesters want deeper changes in the economy and politics of France.
