The New York Post said sources claimed that he might have been trying to pay off gambling debts.

Now he has returned to Canada and has been signed by the Ottawa Titans, in the Frontier League.

His story echoed that of Ruben Rivera, who in 2002 was fired by the Yankees for stealing Derek Jeter’s glove and bat and allegedly selling them.

The Yankees have not commented on Sanford’s departure.
