Elijah Wood has spoken out about the Warner Bros. plan. and New Line to develop more Lord of the Rings movies.
Into a new one interview with GKthe 42-year-old actor said he generally supported the idea, but admitted to having concerns.
“I’m fascinated and excited,” he said. “I hope it’s good. I’m surprised – I don’t know why I’m surprised because of course there would be more movies. The core of that, of course, is the desire to make a lot of money. It’s not like a bunch of executives say : ‘Let’s make really great art.’ And again, don’t begrudge anyone anything, because of course it’s commerce. But great art can come from commerce. So those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.”
“But Lord of the Rings did not come from that place,” he added. “It came out of a passion for these books and a desire to see them realised. And I hope that’s ultimately what will move everything forward with whatever these next movies are. I just hope it’s the same motivating factor at its core every time they hire a screenwriter and a filmmaker – that it’s with reverence for Tolkien’s material and the enthusiasm to explore it.
In another recent interview with AdditionalWood was asked if he would like to reprise his iconic role as Frodo Baggins in a reboot.
“Reboot – I don’t know, but if there are more movies that Frodo might be involved in, I’d be down,” he said.
Wood is doing the rounds to promote his role in the new season of Showtime’s hit cannibalism drama Yellow jackets.
Under the spell of the Ring trilogy collectively earned $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office and won 17 Oscars. The trilogy creators are also in the mix for the new projects, with director Peter Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens previously releasing the statement: “Warner Bros. and Embracer kept us informed every step of the way. We look forward to continuing to talk with them to hear their vision for the future of the franchise.”
