Instagram's latest update of its mobile apps finally recognizes what we have all suspected for a long time: that the vast majority of users of the gram communicate exclusively in the language of emoji. The latest interface customization for Android and iOS from the photo sharing platform adds a new shortcut bar, which places your most frequently used emoji directly above your keyboard.
The feature has been in the test since May, but was unlocked last Thursday for a broader implementation and should now be available to all users on both iOS and Android.
The new shortcut bar is only available via the Comments icon under a message. It will not appear if you use the "add a comment" space or other area where the keyboard is used. That means you can not access it if you keep track of your own messages or send a message.
So what if you are an Instagram fan who does not like emoji? Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to disable the new feature in the app settings – so, for now at least, you will just have to grin and endure.
