Motorola withdrew from the smart watch market in 2016, after having released two versions of its Moto 360 smart watch, the first smart watch with touchscreen and a round display. At the time, the company indicated that there was simply not enough interest in portable devices to continue investing in the category. Fast forward three years and the Moto 360 smartwatch has returned, although not as you would expect.
The new Moto 360 is made by a company called eBuyNow, which describes itself as "an independent, data-driven consumer electronics company" that "works (works) with its own tools to identify precise gaps in the consumer electronics industry, and then continues to build, sell and distribute promising consumer electronics with a strict result-oriented approach. Apparently, that means licensing and reviving a dead smartwatch brand from Motorola and releasing a new product under his name.
The third generation Moto 360, as eBuyNow refers to the product, costs $ 349.99 when shipped in December. It runs on Wear OS, and just like Fossil & # 39; s fifth generation Wear OS watches, the new Moto 360 has a fully circular display, Qualcomm & # 39; s Snapdragon 3100 processor, 1 GB RAM and 8 GB storage. It also has a heart rate monitor, GPS and NFC for mobile payments. You can get it in silver, gold or black stainless steel.
The 1.2-inch, fully circular (no "flat tire" here) 360 x 360 pixel touchscreen is an OLED panel with an always-on option, and there are two buttons on the side of the watch. The top button also rotates, so you can scroll through the interface with a twist, just like the rotating crowns on Fossil watches or the Apple Watch. The lower button can be adjusted to start an app of your choice.
The 355 mAh battery of the Moto 360 charges on the included holder and eBuyNow says it can go from dead to fully charged in just sixty minutes, which is considerably faster than most other smartwatches currently on the market.
In terms of design, the 52g Moto 360 is smaller than some other Wear OS watches, but it is not as compact as the smaller Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 or the 40 mm Apple Watch. The design is modern, but it is still thick and thick and will reduce smaller wrists. The cams in particular remind me of the 2nd generation Moto 360 that Motorola has produced. The latest model also has a bit of a generic look – it's hard to say that this is different from the many Fossil smartwatch designs, unless you see the Motorola batwing logo on the crown.
The OLED screen is also not as vivid or clear as that of Samsung or Apple. Although it has a relatively high resolution, the screen looks visibly grainy compared to the others. It also has a substantial edge around it, making the screen appear smaller than it actually is. The unit that we were able to use a few days before the official announcement is a pre-production model, but the performance is comparable to other Wear OS devices with 1 GB RAM. It is certainly not as responsive as an Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch, but it is also not frustratingly slow to use.
At $ 350, the Moto 360 is one of the most expensive Wear OS watches on the market, and it costs more than the latest Samsung models. It comes with two straps – a leather and a rubber – and the fit and finish is good. But at its core, it is still a Wear OS device, which puts it at a disadvantage compared to other smartwatches. It is not really about the envelope with new technology or a new design, but if you hoped that the Moto 360 would come out of the grave as an updated Wear OS watch, you will not be greatly disappointed.
