The mother of the bride seven years older than Kyle Filipowski has spoken out for the first time amid shocking allegations that her daughter “groomed” the college basketball star while she was still in high school.
The 20-year-old Duke alum got engaged to Caitlin Hutchison in April and is now estranged from her family, who have accused the 27-year-old of “coercive control” and “conspiring” to ensnare the rising star for five years.
“There will be things to come,” Amanda Hutchison said at her home in Madison, Alabama, adding that the couple is keeping a low profile amid the “storm” of accusations.
“What we’ve always told the guys is that for all the good things, if you have faith, there will always be adversaries, there’s always a negative for every positive thing,” he said. “So that’s how we weather those storms.”
Kyle Filipowski, 20, and his fiancée Caitlin Hutchison, 27, are keeping a secret amid a whirlwind of shocking accusations from his family that she groomed him when he was in high school, relatives have revealed.
The couple are “weathering the storm,” Hutchison’s mother Amanda told DailyMail.com, after Filipowski’s family slammed Caitlin as a manipulative schemer who set her sights on Filipowski years ago when he was still at school.
As a sophomore, Filipowski led Duke to the top eight of this year’s NCAA March Madness.
His comments come after the 6-foot-10 Filipowski unexpectedly fell to the second round of the NBA draft last week, where he was selected by the Utah Jazz. ESPN’s Jonathan Givony linked the blow to “off-court events” involving his girlfriend.
Givony’s comment prompted the player’s mother, Rebecca, 60, to respond on X-rated by saying: ‘You’re opening up a two year old issue… and she’s 28 and three years ago she had a diamond ring on her hand when Kyle left Duke. SHE WAS STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL.’
Filipowski’s older brother, Daniel, 29, also publicly expressed his concerns on X. He did not initially name Hutchison, but referred to “Mormon manipulation and brainwashing” and suggested readers “connect some dots.” Hutchison was raised in the LDS Church.
Later, in a series of follow-up posts obtained by DailyMail.com, Daniel was more direct in criticising his younger brother’s partner as a manipulative schemer who set her sights on Filipowski years ago.
According to Daniel, “My brother is a victim and unfortunately he was a “perfect” pawn and target for this girl’s lifelong plan based on his human characteristics and his growing potential as a high-level prospect that began to develop in 2019, exactly at the time she began pursuing him.”
That would have made Filipowski just 15 when Hutchison, who is 27 and not 28 as her mother claimed, “began her search.”
In fact, DailyMail.com has learned that Hutchison has known Filipowski since he was a child.
In a tweet posted in January 2017 by Kyle’s older brother Taylor, 24, a group photo is shown with Filipowski on the far left and Hutchison in the center. Filipowski was 13 and Hutchison was 20 at the time of the photo.
The caption reads: ‘Throwback Thursday of an amazing and fun day. I got to spend time with my cousins again.’
Hutchison’s mother, Amanda (pictured), spoke exclusively to DailyMail.com at her home in Madison, Alabama. She was hesitant to deny the rumours but suggested more details about the controversial couple would be revealed soon.

The player’s older brother, Daniel, 29, posted a cryptic tweet in which he referred to “Mormon grooming and brainwashing” and suggested readers “connect some dots” before getting more direct in criticising Hutchison for allegedly manipulating his brother into a relationship.
Hutchison is not Filipowski’s first cousin, but DailyMail.com understands that his parents, Amanda and Kevin Hutchison, 55, and Rebecca and David Filipowski, 65, were at one point so close that their children considered each other “family”.
As for the Filipowskis, Hutchison took advantage of that closeness and set out to snare the young man who, according to them, because of his height and talent, she recognized had every chance of becoming a successful professional athlete.
Indeed, Hutchison was dating Filipowski when he attended her high school prom, and she went with him when he was 17 and she was 24.
In a post addressed directly to his brother, Daniel stated: ‘Kyle… me, your entire family and friends love you and are here for you!
“I have received a lot of support from families who have a child who has been a victim of this same terrible and evil progression of psychological control and manipulation.”
In a series of screenshots, Daniel also posted definitions of “coercive control,” where a person is subjected to “a pattern of controlling, threatening, and isolating behavior that deprives an intimate partner of freedom, peace of mind, and safety, and over time of their identity, personhood, independence, security, and self-sufficiency.”
She posted the definitions along with the comment: “A message to all the families who have suffered this experience in the past or are going through this right now. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.”
Hutchison is not Filipowski’s first cousin, but DailyMail.com has learned that their parents were once so close that their children considered each other “family.”
Hutchison and Filipowski vacationed together last year in a photo shared on the basketball player’s Instagram.
Neither of these words, nor the sentiments shared with DailyMail.com by Hutchison’s mother this week, suggest any hope of rapprochement any time soon.
In fact, Amanda Hutchison told DailyMail.com that she and her family are hunkered down waiting for the proverbial storm to pass.
Standing outside her home in Alabama, Amanda Hutchison said: “We’re weathering the storms. We all have our pants buttoned up and our zippers up. We’re just covering up.”
He again promised that “there will be a clarification soon,” but did not explain what he meant by that.
According to Amanda, “It’s not in my hands. It’s in the hands of PR, Kyle’s agency and the NBA.”
When contacted by DailyMail.com, the NBA said it was not involved in the situation.
