  • Alanna Kennedy could not hide her frustrations in Marseille
  • The defender missed a golden opportunity against the United States.
  • Matildas’ Olympic campaign is at stake

Alanna Kennedy summed up what all Matildas fans are thinking as the Australians failed to secure an improbable win over the United States in Marseille and were then knocked out of the Paris Games when Canada beat Colombia.

The Matildas’ Olympic campaign was in crisis following their 2-1 defeat in the early hours of Thursday morning, with Tony Gustavsson’s side relying on results in other matches to progress to the knockout stages.

But those results failed to materialise and Colombia sealed the fate of the Australians by losing 1-0 to Canada.

Down two goals going into stoppage time against the Americans, Gustavsson sent no-nonsense defender Kennedy forward and she scored a consolation goal to give the Aussies some hope.

But moments later, the tall defender missed a glorious chance to level the game and knew immediately that she had squandered the opportunity to qualify her country.

“Fuck me, Alanna,” Kennedy appeared to mutter after her shot went wide.

Australia needs Colombia and France to draw or beat Canada and New Zealand respectively to secure a place in the quarter-finals and avoid Olympic humiliation.

An early exit would represent a major downturn from the strong showing at last year’s Women’s World Cup, where Gustavsson led the team to the semi-finals.

More to follow.
