‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Creator on Deciding to End With Season 5, How Saying Goodbye Is the “Hardest Thing in the World”

Date:

(This story contains minor spoilers for The wonderful Mrs. Maisel Season Five.)

The wonderful Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino wanted to make sure the show’s cast and audience were happy with the characters and where they ended up at the end of the fifth and final season.

“We want to make sure everyone walked away from this fulfilled feeling and that their characters understood what was in store for them,” Sherman-Palladino says. The Hollywood Reporter. “Then we throw up some other little surprises that we would’ve talked about and played with if we were going longer, and we thought, ‘Well, we’re not. Let’s pull those back and put them here for everyone to get into the pool is.’”

Sherman-Palladino and co-showrunner Daniel Palladino began writing the season with anchor points of where they wanted their characters to go. Amazon gave the couple the flexibility of eight to 10 episodes, allowing them to see what they wanted to achieve.

“We knew exactly where we wanted to end up,” he says THR. “And we just knew that those were our final markers that we wanted to hit toward the end that we knew was going to be the end from the very beginning.”

When it came to ending the series with season five, Sherman-Palladino said it was also important to her that everyone on The Wonderful Mrs. Maisel was on the same page about the end and pulling to the finish together.

Knowing that season five was a good place to end hasn’t made saying goodbye to the cast and crew any easier, though, the creator explains, sharing that it’s “the hardest thing in the world.” She joked that people who say they love each other on set are lying because the Maisel team is the only group that really loves each other.

“Our cast and our crew became family in the best terms of the word family,” she says. “I’m going to miss them dearly, and I’m going to need a lot of therapy to get over it,” adding, “It’s just a weird coven, like it’s Heaven’s Gate, and we’re all going to put on matching shoes and lie down and , like, going to the mother planet together, but I don’t think that’s going to happen because they’re all working. So yeah, it’s terrible. I’m very depressed.”

In season five of the Prime Video series, Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) gets closer than ever to the success she dreamed of, according to the synopsis, only to discover that closer than ever is so far away. In the first few episodes of the final season, fans see Susie (Alex Borstein) Midge get a job as a writer for The Gordon Ford Show, hoping that she will one day appear as a guest on the show. But it doesn’t take them long to find out that Gordon Ford has a rule that doesn’t allow people who work on the show to ever be guests on the show.

The wonderful Mrs. Maisel season five is now streaming on Prime Video, with new episodes airing every Friday until May 26.
