A man caught sex with a minor girl in Indonesia begged for mercy after receiving five lashes – but was beaten 95 times after doctors had examined him.

He and another man accused of the same crime were each punished with a hundred lashes and imprisoned for five years in the state of Aceh, which was the majority of Muslims.

While one of the men wailed for mildness, the other underwent the whipping silently while blood seeped through his white tunic.

One had had sex with his minor stepdaughter while the other was sleeping with a minor neighbor.

Sharia flogging is common for a series of crimes in the region at the tip of the island of Sumatra, including gambling, drinking alcohol and homosexual relationships or relationships outside of marriage.

It is the only province in Indonesia that imposes Islamic legislation.

The age of Indonesia is 18 years old, although 16-year-olds can marry with permission from their parents.

The 100-stroke penalty is reserved for the most serious crimes and the couple was also sentenced to five years in prison.

Half a dozen men who were beaten for online gambling this week, an insult according to Islamic law, each received a rattan stick between seven and 11 strokes.

On Wednesday, one of the men raised his hand and pleaded with a masked sharia officer to stop after receiving only five lashes, saying he could not stand the pain.

Resuming the flogging after physicians on site had declared him fit enough to get about 95 extra strokes.

We only postpone a caning if the doctors say there is a serious threat to health & # 39 ;, said the local district attorney Isnawati, who speaks with one name, Wednesday to reporters.

The other man quietly tolerated his punishment while he was bleeding.

Unlike some public flogging that could attract hundreds of spectators, including children, only a few dozen people watched Wednesday's beating, which took place in a sports stadium.

Usually, public lashes are held outside a mosque after Friday prayers.

Law groups beat public caning as cruel, and the Indonesian President Joko Widodo has called to stop.

But the practice has broad support among the predominantly Muslim population of Aceh – about 98 percent of the five million inhabitants practice Islam.

Earlier this year, Aceh said that flogging will take place behind the prison walls in the future, but some local authorities have continued to use public litter.
