The lost scene of Marilyn Monroe of The Misfits is finally discovered more than half a century later

The nude and lost scene of Marilyn Monroe has been discovered more than half a century after she undressed for the 1961 film The Misfits (Pictured, Mrs. Monroe and her co-star Clark Gable)

When Marilyn Monroe filmed a love scene with Clark Gable in The Misfits, she dropped the sheet and exposed her body in what would have been the first nude scene of an American actress in a feature film.

But director John Huston refused to include him, insisted on a new take, and it is believed that the daring footage was destroyed.

Now, more than half a century later, the author of an upcoming biography of Monroe has discovered that he has survived.

Charles Casillo interviewed Curtice Taylor, son of film producer Frank Taylor, and was shocked to learn that he has kept the footage in a closed cabinet since his father's death in 1999.

Mr. Taylor said: "Many times, the unused shots were destroyed, but Frank Taylor believed it was so important and so innovative that he saved it."

The Misfits, filmed in 1961 and written by the then husband of Mrs. Monroe, Arthur Miller, tells the story of three cowboys competing for the attention of a beautiful woman.

It was his last film completed and he died the following year at 36 years of an overdose of sleeping pills.

Conspiracy theories have persisted since, but about 56 years later, Ms. Monroe remains one of Hollywood's most iconic stars.

Mr. Casillo said that, until now, his only nude scene in the film was thought to be in his last incomplete movie, Something's Got to Give.

He said: & # 39; If you read [The Misfits] script … it does not say anything about nudity … When she made the scene, everyone was shocked on the set.

"Huston sighed and said:" Honey, I've seen them before "Gable and others … they wanted [it] Stay inside. Huston did not … because he felt it … it was totally unnecessary for the scene.

The footage, with sound, lasts approximately 45 seconds. Curtice Taylor, a photographer and teacher, understands why his father was so interested in including him: "He is much more passionate."

At that time, there were censorship restrictions on the characters on the screen who were seen together in bed.

He said: "So Gable is fully dressed. He enters his room. She is asleep. He caresses her and kisses her neck, turns her face and gives her a good lip hug.

& # 39; That exists in the scene in the [final] movie, but not for the passionate degree of this, which is much better.

"The smile on his face when he kisses his shoulder is simply sublime."

The discovery of the footage is presented in Charles Casillo's next film, The Private Life of a Public Icon, which will be published on August 14.

After Gable leaves the room, Mrs. Monroe lifts the sheet to put on her blouse.

Taylor believes that she left him in part because of her training as a method actress.

He said: Why is a woman sitting on the bed, with no one in the room, lifting the sheet and then trying to put on a blouse at the same time? Has no sense.

Then she just drops the leaf. I think that is one of the reasons why he did this. There are quite a few shots of this scene.

"Every time he dropped the page, which he did a couple of times, Huston said:" Cut, remember the sheet, Marilyn. "

Mr. Taylor was surprised that the footage was an edited sequence, and wondered if the censors had insisted on its removal.

He attended the session at only 13 years old and said he remembers Mrs. Monroe talking to her and asking her to do "small favors."

He said: & # 39; She would give me $ 5m to go find something & # 39;

Everything he will do with the material has not yet been decided.

The misfits also marked the end of Mrs. Monroe's marriage.

In his book, Mr. Casillo describes how Monroe relied on pills during filming, and hoped to continue an adventure with actor Yves Montand.

He said: The marriage in which he had placed so many hopes was over. To make matters worse, most of the shooting would take place during the summer months in the scorching desert of Nevada.

& # 39; The Millers took a [hotel] suite together, but it soon became clear that their union was not harmonious at all. His violent arguments could be heard through the walls. "

The discovery of the images of Misfits is presented in Marilyn Monroe by Mr. Casillo: The private life of a public icon, which will be published by St. Martin's Press on Tuesday, August 14.
