The Locarno International Film Festival unveiled the full program for 2023 on Wednesday, with dozens of world premieres scheduled to screen at the 76th edition of the Swiss festival.
The main section of Locarno’s Piazza Grande will feature several of this season’s festival favorites, including Cannes’ Palme d’Or winner anatomy of a fall from the French director Justine Triet starring Sandra Hüller; The last (and possibly last) feature of Ken Loach, the old oak; Noora Niasari’s Sundance Audience Award Winner shaydapresenting sacred spider the star Czar Amir Ebrahimi; and the comedy from Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman theater camp, which won a Special Jury Award at Sundance. Other highlights include the US horror feature. Shooting Stars the directors Richard Karpala and Gabriel Bienczycki; Dammi of 71′ and white boy rick-director Yann Demange; and magnetic continentthe new nature documentary march of the penguins‘ filmmaker Luc Jacquet on the continent of Antarctica.
In its Concorso internazionale section of films from emerging nations of cinema, Lorcarno’s 2023 lineup will include sardonic Romanian drama Don’t expect too much from the end of the world by Radu Jude (Hitting Bad Luck or Loony Porn), the comedy yannik by the French avant-garde Quentin Dupieux (realité, smoking causes cough), and Lake Essential Truthsthe latest display of avant-garde surrealism from Philippine art house star Lav Diaz (the woman who left, devil season).
Eight of the 15 films in the Locarno Concorso Cineasti del presente sidebar, highlighting first and second feature films, are by female directors. Among them is the erotic comedy. Very active by Spanish directors María Gisèle Royo and Julia de Castro, the French philosophical drama by Eléonore Saintagnan Camping du Lac and Family photo by American filmmaker Lucy Kerr.
Oscar-nominated British actor Riz Ahmed (metal sound), will be honored this year with the Locarno Davide Campari Award of Excellence. Ahmed will receive the lifetime achievement honor on the festival’s opening night on August 2. The festival will also screen Bassam Tariq’s 2020 feature. mogul mowgliin which Ahmed stars and co-produces.
Locarno artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro called the star of The road to Guantanamo, four lions and Rouge One: A Star Wars Story “A brilliant and versatile talent in today’s cinema. A chameleon, he can go from blockbuster to auteur cinema, equally at ease on stage or on television, rapping into a microphone or acting as an executive producer… he is the embodiment of a type of cinema that is getting better and better, more receptive, finally able to hear new voices. Riz Ahmed is the face of a future that finally becomes possible.”
