UEFA and the League have an agreement with FIFA over the international match calendar and club compensation payments to release players on international duty.
The Union of European Clubs was launched on Monday, a new body it said aims to represent “small and medium-sized” football clubs in a field dominated by the wealthy elite.
The federation was launched in the Belgian capital, Brussels, where it will be based, and has said it intends to “give a voice” to around 1,400 professional clubs in Europe, which, with their absence from any of the three UEFA club competitions, have no proper representation among the governing body. The organization’s structure remains murky because a management team has not yet been appointed or its bylaws published. However, the federation made it clear during its launch that 40 clubs from 25 countries had joined it, in light of the presence of the English Crystal Palace, the Belgian Union Saint-Gilloise and the Croatian Lokomotiva Zagreb during its launch.
He added that he intends to work alongside the influential European Clubs Association, which was established in 2008 and has more than 300 members, and is the only current body for continental clubs represented in the UEFA Executive Committee.
Neither UEFA nor the League, which together run the most lucrative club competitions in Europe, including the Champions League, have commented on the launch of the new body.
