The Last of Us: Tech experts call the PC version “beta”, Steam relaxes the refund rule

Date:

The story masterpiece causes some problems on the PC.

According to the tech experts at Digital Foundry, The Last of Us Part 1’s PC port is disappointing and lacking from a technical point of view. Their analysis revealed several major issues – we also bring you the opinion of our in-house expert.

The Last of Us on PC “just a beta”?

The conclusion to the Digital Foundry in their analysis is devastating: the port of The Last of Us is effectively just a beta with serious problems. They compared how the game runs on a PS5, a Monster PC with Geforce RTX 4090 and Core i9 12900K, and a mid-range machine with Geforce RTX 2070 Super and Ryzen 5 3600.

A major problem is the high CPU requirementswhich can also push strong processors to the edge of their performance. This leads to problems when playing – or even to crashes, which some PC users are still complaining about.

The high VRAM requirements are also a big problem. According to Digital Foundry, The Last of Us runs terribly on cards with 8.0 GB VRAM or only with significantly reduced texture quality. The problems only become noticeably smaller with 10.0 GB VRAM or more.

There is also good news from the analysis by Digital Foundry: The first shader installation should run noticeably faster after the hot fixes that have already been released. The sometimes long loading times should also have improved a little.

We can confirm the former based on our own experience, even if the duration is still far too long. With a Ryzen 5 5600X and an RTX 2060 Super we had to wait almost 40 minutes for the first start after reinstalling the GPU, with the current version it is 21 minutes.

Here in the video we explain exactly how the messed up PC launch of The Last of Us went:

Steam refunds probably possible without any problems

If you have serious problems with The Last of Us Part 1 on the PC: According to the developer Naughty Dog, two patches will appear in the coming days that should help. If you’d rather have your money back for the full-price title, you probably have a good chance on Steam at the moment.

Normally, Steam only refunds purchases if you have played the title for less than two hours. In the case of serious technical problems for which your system is not to blame, Valve often grants refunds with more playing time. Loud Reddit many players got refunds even after 3, 4 or more hours.

What do you think of Digital Foundry’s in-depth analysis? Are you experiencing the technical issues of The Last of Us Part 1 on PC yourself or is your system coping with the title? Feel free to write us the current status of things in the comments!
